Waddle Roll Guide – Snowballs, Snowmen, Every Ember and Boss, and How to Get 3 Stars
Waddle Roll! is a free browser game where you play Pom, a penguin who protects an igloo full of eggs from fire embers. Your only tool is snow: you roll snowballs that grow as they go, kick them into the embers like bowling balls, and stack them into snowmen that fight for you. This guide explains how the snow works, how to build, how to handle every ember and boss, and how to earn all three stars.
Controls
- Waddle: WASD or the arrow keys. Walk over snow and Pom starts pushing a small snowball by himself. On phones and tablets, drag on the left side of the screen for the floating joystick (Settings can switch it to “waddle toward your finger”).
- Kick: Space, Enter or K kicks the ball the way Pom faces. Clicking (or tapping the arena on a touch screen) kicks toward that spot. A dotted line shows where the ball will roll, and a yellow ring marks the ember the kick will bend toward.
- Leave a ball: turn around. Pom lets go and the ball stays where it is.
- Belly slide: the kick button with empty flippers (it says SLIDE on touch screens). A quick slide that knocks embers back.
- Pause: Esc or P. Restart: R.
How the snow works
- Every snowball picks up the snow it rolls over and grows by exactly that much. Behind it you’ll see a trail of bare ground. Snow slowly falls again, so the trails fill back in over a minute or so.
- Deep drifts (the thicker snow patches) grow a ball fast. Thin snow grows it slowly. Ice makes balls glide much further, but they don’t grow on it.
- The biggest ball you can roll is about 2.9 m wide, and a big ball slows Pom down. The meter at the bottom of the screen shows your ball’s size, and says base ✓ once it is big enough to be the bottom of a snowman.
- Embers melt the snow they walk on, leaving dark wet tracks. Lava, hot vents and fire puddles melt it too.
Bowling embers
- A rolling ball hurts every ember it hits. Bigger and faster means more damage: a small, fast ball puts out a Flicker, but tough embers need a big ball or several hits.
- Kicked small balls fly fast and far. Big balls roll slower and stop sooner, so get closer before you kick them.
- Two embers with one ball is a Double, three or more is a STRIKE, and every ember after the first scores 50 % more.
- Hitting embers costs your ball a little snow. A ball that is too small just bounces off tough embers.
- Cinder Bats fly over small balls. Only a ball about 1 m wide or bigger, or a snowman’s snowball, can hit them.
Building: walls, snowmen and Super Snowmen
- A ball you leave behind is a wall. Embers walk around walls when there is a way round, or stop to melt through them. Use walls to make embers take the long way past your snowmen.
- A resting ball at least 0.9 m wide shows a ring on the ground. The ring turns green when the ball you are pushing is small enough to go on top (88 % of the bottom ball’s size or less). Push it in, or kick it in, and you get a snowman.
- Snowmen throw snowballs at the ember closest to the igloo within about 6 m, roughly once a second.
- Put a third, smaller ball on top for a Super Snowman with a top hat: it throws almost twice as fast, further and harder.
- Embers that touch a snowman melt it, and tough embers (Hotheads, Lava Slugs, Magma Golems) go out of their way to do it. A melted snowman collapses back into snow on the ground, which you can roll up again.
- Patch the igloo: push a snowball into a hurt igloo and it soaks up the snow. Bigger balls repair more.
Getting toasted
Pom can’t lose a life. If an ember (or hot ground) touches him he gets toasted: he turns sooty, spins for about a second, drops his ball and blinks for a moment while he can’t be toasted again. The belly slide does not get you toasted, so it’s a safe way to push embers away.
The embers
| Ember | What to know |
|---|---|
| Flicker | The basic flame. One decent ball puts it out. |
| Hothead | Three times as tough. Detours to melt a snowman nearby, so keep a big ball ready. |
| Zippy Spark | Fast and wiggly, hard to bowl. Snowmen are great at sniping them. |
| Lava Slug | Slow and tough (5 hits’ worth). Leaves a hot trail that melts balls and snowmen rolling over it, and melts snowmen fast. |
| Cinder Bat | Flies straight at the igloo over every wall. Needs snowman shots or a tall ball. |
| Torch Imp | Stops in range and lobs fireballs at snowmen, resting balls, Pom or the igloo, then moves on after a few throws. Spare balls make good decoys. |
| Magma Golem | Big, slow and very hot. Breaks into three Flickers when it goes out, so be ready to finish them. |
Embers that reach the igloo sizzle in and melt a chunk of it. Tougher embers melt more.
The bosses
- Big Toasty (Frosty Meadow): a grumpy campfire on log legs. A red ring grows under it before every stomp; the heat wave melts snow, shrinks balls and snowmen and toasts Pom, so step out of the ring. It calls Flickers now and then. Only big balls really hurt it.
- Sizzle Serpent (Crystal Lake): spits fireballs, then dives under the ice and pops up somewhere else with a blast. A bubbling ring shows where it will come up. Bowl it while it is above the ice.
- Chili Chief (Pine Peaks): hops toward the igloo and lobs chili bombs. A shadow shows where each one lands, and it leaves a fire puddle that keeps melting things for a few seconds. Spread your snowmen out. It calls Zippy Sparks.
- Magma Mama (Ember Volcano): leaves lava wherever she walks, stomps like Big Toasty and calls two Magma Golems at 70 % and again at 35 % health.
When a boss reaches the igloo it bumps it and gets knocked back a long way (“Brrr, cold!”), then comes again. A boss bar at the top shows how much is left.
The four realms
- Frosty Meadow: soft snow and pines. Learn to grow, kick and build here.
- Crystal Lake: frozen patches where balls glide and don’t grow, and holes in the ice that swallow any ball that rolls into them.
- Pine Peaks: night under the northern lights, with deep drifts and lots of trees to bounce off. A hard knock on a pine shakes its snow down.
- Ember Volcano: little snow, lava cracks that melt balls, and hot vents that puff steam every few seconds (watch for the white ring).
How to get three stars
Every stage has three star goals: survive every wave, keep the igloo above 60 %, and a challenge, such as building a number of snowmen, rolling a ball of a certain size, a strike of a certain size, never getting toasted, keeping the igloo perfect, building a Super Snowman, bowling a number of embers or patching the igloo. The challenge is shown at the top right during play.
- Use the countdown before the first wave to build one or two snowmen in front of the igloo.
- Leave big balls a few metres in front of your snowmen. Embers walk around them and spend longer in range.
- Keep a medium ball rolling between waves so you always have something to kick.
- For strike challenges, wait until several embers walk in a line toward you, then kick a big ball straight down that line.
- If the igloo gets hurt, patch it right away with the ball you are pushing.
Hats and Blizzard Night
Stars unlock eight hats for Pom, from the Bobble Beanie to the Ice Crown (44 stars). After clearing four stages, Blizzard Night opens: endless waves that get bigger every time, with a boss every sixth wave and tougher embers later on. Your best score and wave are saved.
