Picnic Heist Guide – How to Steal Every Snack, Avoid Getting Caught and Get 3 Stars

Glowbit Games · Updated

Picnic Heist! is a free ant colony game for your browser and phone. Your colony of tiny masked ants raids a family picnic: you draw trails to the snacks, the ants carry them home together, and you freeze whenever the family looks down. This guide explains how everything works and how to get 3 stars on all 12 picnics.

Trails: how ants get to the food

  • Drag from the anthill to a snack to lay a glowing pheromone trail. Idle ants march out along it, grab the snack and carry it home along the same path. You can also draw from the snack back to the anthill.
  • Tap or click a snack for a quick trail. The game finds a route around cups, jugs, baskets and other solid things for you.
  • Branch off an existing trail: start a new drag on a trail instead of the anthill. The new trail shares the old one up to that point.
  • Tap a trail to remove it. The snack is dropped where it is and its ants walk home.
  • A drawn trail can’t pass through solid props. If it turns red, go around.

How many ants a snack needs

The label above each snack shows how many ants it takes to lift it. It turns green when enough ants are waiting at home. A few examples: crumbs and blueberries need 1 ant, grapes, chips and candy 2, strawberries and marshmallows 3, cookies 4, cheese and pretzels 5, donuts and s’mores 8, the ice lolly 9, the cupcake 10, the sandwich 12, the hot dog 14, the burger 16, the watermelon 18 and the birthday cake 22.

A snack only moves once all its ants are holding it. Until then the label shows how many have arrived (for example 7/12).

The colony grows. Every snack you deliver hatches new ants: about half its ant count (at least one). Small snacks early in a picnic grow your colony, which then lets you carry the big, valuable ones.

Freeze: the heart of the heist

The family members sit around the cloth and chat. Their faces are in the top-left corner.

  1. Warning: a face shows “!” and a dashed circle appears on the cloth where they are about to look. You have a little over a second.
  2. Looking: the circle becomes a bright pool for about three seconds and drifts a little.
  3. Only moving snacks inside the pool raise suspicion. Ants walking without food are fine, and so is a snack that stands still.

Hold Space (or the big FREEZE button on a phone) and every ant and every carried snack stops. The clock keeps running, so don’t freeze for longer than you need. If suspicion fills up, they grab the snack back and eat it (“Hey! My cupcake!”). Three busts end the picnic with no stars. After a bust that person stays alert for a while and looks more often.

Tips:

  • Watch the dashed circle, not just the face. If your snack’s path doesn’t cross it, keep going.
  • Big snacks raise suspicion faster than small ones.
  • If you find holding a button tiring, turn on Freeze button: tap to toggle in the settings.

Hazards and thieves

  • Stomps (Sneaker Season and later): a shoe-shaped shadow with a red rim appears where the kid will stomp, about 1.7 seconds before it lands. Ants under it get knocked silly for a few seconds and drop what they carry. The snack waits there and more ants come for it. The kid aims at busy trails, so a second route can help.
  • Thieves: the seagull (beach), Biscuit the dog (backyard) and the raccoon (camp) go for snacks nobody is carrying. The target gets a red ring and a warning. If at least half of the ants that snack needs are holding it when the thief arrives, it is scared off. The gull can only lift snacks that need 10 ants or fewer, the raccoon 12 or fewer, and Biscuit 16 or fewer, so the watermelon is safe from the gull but the burger is not safe from Biscuit.
  • Waves (beach): after a warning, the sea washes up the bottom of the towel. Ants in the water are washed back. Grab the snacks down there between waves.
  • Sprinkler (backyard): the dashed blue circle shows its reach. Ants hit by the jet keep walking but slowly while they drip. Draw your trails around the circle when you can.
  • Jam and honey spills slow ants down. Solid props block trails.

Stars

Every picnic has three stars: two point goals (snack values add up as you deliver them) and a special goal, which is one of:

  • Steal every snack on the cloth,
  • Never get caught (zero busts), or
  • Steal a particular snack, such as the cupcake, the watermelon, the burger or the birthday cake.

You need the first star to unlock the next picnic. The picnic ends when the time runs out or when there are no snacks left.

Feast Mode and the Picnic Planner

Feast Mode gives you three minutes on one of the four places while the family keeps unpacking new snacks and glances more and more often. It saves your best score per place. Places unlock as you progress through the picnics.

The Picnic Planner lets you build your own picnic: choose the place, lunch length, starting ants, up to three family members, a stomping kid, a thief (not in the park) and waves or a sprinkler, then tap snacks and props onto the cloth and move the anthill. You can save up to 30 picnics, test them, copy them, delete them and share them as codes that start with PHT1.

Upgrades and sugar

Delivered snack points turn into sugar, plus a bonus for every new star. Spend it in the Colony Shop:

  • Bigger Colony: +3 starting ants per level, up to 5 levels. The best first buy, because more ants means more snacks at once.
  • Strong Jaws: snacks are carried 12% faster per level.
  • Quick Feet: ants walk 12% faster per level.
  • Sneaky Steps: the family gets suspicious 15% slower per level. Great if you keep getting busted.

Ant colours and hats are just for fun: try the Golden ants or the tiny crown.

Quick tips for 3 stars

  • Start each picnic with cheap snacks close to the anthill to grow the colony, then go for the big ones.
  • Keep an eye on the ant counter in the bottom-left corner: it shows how many ants are free.
  • When a thief marks a snack, send a crew right away. Half a crew is enough.
  • Freeze early rather than late, and let go as soon as the pool has passed.
